Your baseline: the number that actually means something
Your own normal, measured over weeks, is the only fair comparison you have. How a baseline forms, what it can tell you, and how to use one without obsessing.
Somewhere out there is a person who sleeps 7 hours, snores 4 minutes a night, and feels wonderful. Somewhere else is a person who sleeps 8, snores 20, and feels wonderful too. Neither of them is doing it wrong. They just have different normals.
That is the entire problem with comparing your numbers to anyone else’s, and the entire case for the one comparison that is fair: you, against your own recent past. That comparison has a name. Everyone’s normal is different
Bodies run on different settings. How much sleep you need to feel rested, whether you run early-bird or night-owl, how much sound an ordinary night contains: all of it varies from person to person, and much of it is built in, shaped by genetics and stable over time.
So the general recommendations exist for good reasons, and they are fine as far as they go. But one healthy adult thrives on 7 hours while another needs 8 and a half. One quiet sleeper and one lifelong light snorer can both be perfectly well. A universal target treats those people as identical. They are not.
The guidance that comes with the better measurement tools is blunt about this: compare readings to your own baseline, never to someone else’s score. A number is only high or low against what is typical for the body that produced it.
Heart metrics taught the wearable world this lesson years ago. Resting heart rate and heart-rate variability differ so much between healthy people that the raw values are nearly useless for comparison, and every serious device now frames them the same way: here is your typical, here is today against it. Two people can hold steady baselines 15 points apart and both be fine. How a baseline forms
You do nothing except sleep, repeatedly.

One practical note for the first 2 weeks: let them be ordinary. There is a documented pull toward performing for a new measurement, sleeping carefully because the meter is running. Resist it. The baseline you want describes your actual life, late dinners included, because that is the life every future night will be compared against. One night is never the story, and the first night of a new tool is the least representative night of all.
How to read against it
Three habits cover it.
Check the week, in the morning. A glance: are nights landing inside the usual band? Morning is the right time to look, once, with coffee. Data checked at 3 am serves nobody.
Act on the month. If you want to change something, change 1 evening habit and give it a week or 2, then let the trend answer. The playbook is in evenings that lead to quieter nights.
Let single nights go. A loud Tuesday inside a flat month is a Tuesday. The month already forgave it.
Without obsessing
A word on the failure mode, because it is real and it has a name. Researchers coined the term orthosomnia for an unhealthy fixation on perfect sleep numbers, where the tracking itself starts to feed the sleeplessness. People lie awake calculating what the score will be, which is a bad joke played on a good intention.
The findings behind that research are worth taking to heart. Consumer sleep measurements are estimates, useful for direction and pattern rather than decimal precision, a boundary mapped honestly in what sleep tracking can and cannot tell you. Validation studies find that trackers routinely misjudge exact durations, especially on broken nights. None of that matters when you read for trend, and all of it matters if you read a single night like a courtroom verdict. Trends deserve your attention. Verdicts do not exist here.
The experts who study tracker habits offer advice that sounds almost old-fashioned. Look at the data in the morning, once, and never during the night. Care about the handful of things that move the needle: steady bed and wake times, enough total hours, and what your evenings contained. Make 1 small change at a time and watch what happens. Keep the habits as the foundation and the numbers as the commentary, in that order.
So hold the data lightly. If checking a score ever starts adding tension to your mornings, look weekly instead of daily for a while, or step away for a week entirely. A baseline is patient. It will be there when you come back, and the entire point of measuring against yourself is that nobody, including the number, gets to grade you.
There is also a simple scheduling trick that keeps the relationship healthy: decide in advance when the data gets your attention. A Sunday morning glance at the week is enough for most people, with the month reviewed when something actually changed, a new habit, a new season, a move. Attention on a schedule stays curiosity. Attention on impulse drifts toward checking, and checking is the door orthosomnia walks through.
The calmest measurement there is
A baseline asks nothing of you and compares you to nobody. It simply remembers your nights honestly, so that when something changes, you notice, and when nothing changes, you rest easy. You, measured against you. It is the calmest honest measurement there is, and it is the only one this subject ever needed.
